Ridgefield CT Real Estate

Founded in the early 1700’s, Ridgefield was a small town located along the stagecoach route between New York City and Boston. At the time, about 30 families from Long Island Sound settlements bought these uplands from the Ramapoo Indians. Since then, Ridgefield has had a rich history that includes such personalities as Benedict Arnold, who fought here, and Eugene O’Neill, who wrote here. Ridgefield is the site of the Revolutionary War 1777 “Battle of Ridgefield.” American Generals Wooster and Arnold attempted to hold off the British in the only land battle on Connecticut soil during the Revolution. There are still monuments and markers to the events or incidents that transpired in that 1777 battle. They remind us that Ridgefield has a heritage that must be preserved. The Revolutionary Road historical project is currently being developed. When it is completed it will aid all of us in helping to uncover the treasures of Ridgefield, its history, and its patriots. Ridgefield is one of Connecticut’s finest treasures. The town is the perfect blend of New England small town charm, combined with Americana’s modern day tastes. Now almost 30 years later, there has been a transformation in the town. While it still retains much of the charm of yesteryear, the landmark building are sandwiched between the “modern” day improvements that must necessarily become a part of any modern, growing community.
Located in Fairfield County, the Town of Ridgefield, Connecticut offers residents the best of small-town living with the amenities typically found in a modern city. With excellent schools, a strong economy and numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, Ridgefield residents enjoy everything they could ever want or need to live, work and play.
Ridgefield has a historic downtown area lined with large elm and oak trees and Colonial and Victorian homes. Many of these historic buildings stand among modern structures without losing the town’s original charm. Several of these buildings have been renovated for other purposes. The Lounsbury House, located in downtown Ridgefield, is a Community Center that hosts various activities and events throughout the year. The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, a non-collecting contemporary art gallery founded in 1964, is located in a former grocery and hardware store built in 1783. Downtown Ridgefield also boasts local shops, cafes, antique stores, and one of the town’s parks — Ballard Green. The town is famed for its handsome Main Street, which stretches more than a mile along a ridge some 750 feet above sea level and is lined with stately homes, museums, churches, and shops.

Many of Ridgefield’s historic buildings and landmarks have been revitalized over the years to compliment the area’s appreciation of history, arts, and culture. The Ridgefield Playhouse, built in the 1930’s, was renovated and restored not long ago, and the community can once again enjoy plays, musical performances, movies, and community events in this historic facility. The Ridgefield Theater Barn, located in a converted dairy barn, has been producing performances and workshops for more than 40 years. The Cass Gilbert Fountain, located along Main Street, is a well-known landmark that was also recently rebuilt.

Connecticut Magazine regularly ranks Ridgefield highest in quality of life, based on its schools, low crime rate, and scope of services. Its school system is considered among the finest in a state known for fine schools. Even its dining is world-class; for nearly a century, the town has been famous for its excellent restaurants, from world-class country inns to modern bistros.
